Let's debunk the myth! Women over 40 shouldn't go long?

Women over 40 shouldn't go long?

We aren't quite sure why, but over time there has been the build up of the belief that when you hit 40, it is time to chop your locks!

Although shorter hair is loved by many women, who said you can't rock long hair as well?
It is perfectly acceptable to keep your long hair - just make sure you get trims to maintain your hair health.

Overtime, as your body ages - your hair will too. I know it's not the happiest point but it's important to adapt to the changes happening on your head. Anything from thinning hair to hair becoming more coarse - it is important to realise that your may need to be styled and cared for differently based on your hair type.

If your hair starts to thin, shoulder length hair or shorter is perfect. Shoulder length hair can make the hair appear thicker while adding layers will give volume, whereas longer hair will show thinning ends more prominently.

If you hair is becoming coarse, longer hair will also work well for you!
If you don't know what style to go for - consult with your hairdresser. They know all the styles and how to show off your hair to its full potential!

Just because you are turning 40 doesn't mean you need to book a birthday snip! Love your hair at any length. :)

Bedhead Knots & Tangles!

There is nothing worse than waking up with a head full of knots and tangles, even though it was perfectly brushed before hitting the hay!

Your hair may seem to stop growing at a certain point. This is due to knots and breakages! To avoid tangles, tie your hair up before bed – this will help each strand of hair reach its full potential.

Gather the hair at the top of your head before going to sleep, this will put your hair to rest during the night!

Healthy Food for Healthy Hair!

The health of your hair not only depends on what you put on it, but also what you put into your body!
The cells and processes that support strong, vibrant hair depend on a balanced, protein-rich, nutritional diet that helps to fortify the hair follicle.
Although there are many factors that may affect the condition of your locks, food is definitely a priority and a main point of focus! Give your hair the TLC it needs by eating these nutritious foods!

Salmon

Besides being rich in protein and vitamin D, Salmon also contains Omega-3 fatty acids which the body cannot produce, and are essential for your body to grow hair. Omega-3 not only helps your hair, it is a superstar when it comes to your skin! While the vitamin D keeps your bones and teeth strong too!

Walnuts

Another holder of the amazing omega-3 fatty acids, they also contain biotin and vitamin E. These help to protect your cells from DNA damage, and reduce hair loss! The small amounts of the copper found in walnuts, is the perfect mineral that helps keep your natural hair colour rich and luscious!

Oysters

I know… Oysters are not everyone’s cup of tea, but with the amount of protein and zinc within them – they can have a huge impact on hair health! Not only does zinc reduce hair loss, it also adds moisture to the scalp – reducing the chances of dryness and flaking! Without enough protein, your body is unable to reproduce the hair that naturally sheds, or it will produce dry, brittle or weak strands. If you don’t like oysters, get your zinc fill from nuts, beef or eggs!

Sweet Potatoes

A super food packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps fight ageing! The beta-carotene is turned into vitamin A, which is essential for all cells in the body to function! Vitamin A also protects the scalp oils, maintaining moisture and reducing the chances of a dry, dandruff producing scalp! Of course if you aren’t a fan of this super food, this antioxidant can also be found in carrots, pumpkin, mangoes and apricots!

Eggs

An amazing protein source that is loaded with the minerals zinc, selenium, sulfur and iron! Iron is crucial as it helps cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Low iron is a major cause of hair loss – particularly in women! So make sure you eat your eggs for the iron enrichment you need!

Spinach

This leafy green vegetable is rich in nutrients and antioxidants! The iron, beta-carotene, folate and vitamin C all help maintain scalp oils circulating and keep the hair follicles healthy! It is also loaded with lutein, Vitamin B, C & E, potassium, calcium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids which can all have wondrous effects on the body! No wonder Pop-eye loved spinach so much!

Lentils

These legumes are a great staple for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters, and contain lots of protein, iron, zinc and biotin!

Greek yogurt

Not only enriched in protein, but also filled with vitamin B & D– which are all important for hair follicle health!

Blueberries

An amazing nutrient-filled superhero enriched with vitamin C! Vitamin C supports the small blood vessels that feed the follicles and is crucial for scalp circulation, while reducing hair breakage! The antioxidants in blueberries also protect you from premature aging! What a bonus!

Poultry

An extraordinary protein choice, as well as zinc, iron and B vitamins that help to keep strands strong. Since hair is almost all protein, eating protein-rich food is essential to form the building blocks of hair!

So there it is! A simple list of food that can be easily incorporated into your everyday life to ensure that you are getting the protein, nutrients and antioxidants required for the luscious, locks you have always dreamed of! Don’t forget to embrace great hair products as well, of course these also have a huge impact on your hair health!

Beachy Waves, Buns and Messy Braids

There is nothing better than sporting beautiful, beachy waves on a hot summers day (of coarse, these looks are appropriate for any event!)
The combination of waves with braids is gorgeous and an effortless look that will turn heads!

For those with naturally wavy/curly hair! All you have to do is apply a hair oil after you wash your hair (The bhave Riot Control Oil is perfect to help hydrate, remove frizz and to create shine!), and lightly scrunch the hair - leave it to dry naturally and you will have beautiful natural waves! Then to spice it up, add a braid to the front of your hair or just leave all your hair down!

It's not as easy for those with straight hair, but have no fears! This gorgeous look can be achieved!

While your hair is wet apply the bhave Riot Control Oil and leave your hair to dry (You can use a hair dryer, but it is always good to reduce heat on the hair - especially before the next step!)
Once your hair is dry, use a large barrel hair curler, to create simple curls. Don't apply the curler for too long as you do not want your curls to be too tight - (if they are you can just stretch them out!)

Ofcoarse for those super hot days, a bun is the perfect way to get your hot hair off your neck! Create a messy bun or top knot, and spice it up with a cute braid!

Enjoy the sunshine, but don't forget to slip, slop, slap!

New Year Resolutions! You Can Do It!

Happy New Year!

So 2014 is here! As we close the doors of 2013 we reflect on the past year - on the things we've done, changes we've made or goals we have achieved (or tried to achieved!). We also create resolutions for the year to come.

It is important when creating your new year resolutions that you:
  • Pick realistic goals, and make sure you define them and set specific results to ensure you know what you are aiming for!
  • Set a schedule (a realistic schedule!) to keep you on track! Whether your goals may be weight related, job hunting, to quit smoking or relationship building - all goals take time. Give yourself enough time to complete your resolution. The key is to stay flexible and adopt to changes necessary for your goal - if your schedule isn't working, you can change it!
  • Setbacks are normal and can be upsetting! It is always difficult to stick to a goal - just remember that we are all human and we all make mistakes! Don't be disillusioned if you don't meet a schedule or skip a day at gym - these are temporary setbacks! If you can push through these, then you are a step closer to accomplishing your goals!
  • Enlist help or support from those around you! Reaching a goal is a lot easier when you have the support and help from your family, friends, support groups or professionals!
Don't forget that a new year is not only a time to make changes in life, but also a time to be thankful for being alive and well for another year!

The team at bhave are so excited for 2014 and all the opportunities it will bring - and we hope you are too!

Make sure you let us know what your new year resolutions are!
